Kashmir teenager scores over 99% marks in JEE Mains

Srinagar:  A 19-year-old youth has made Kashmir proud by becoming one of the few candidates to score 99.23 percent marks in JEE-Mains despite lockdown and internet shutdown in the valley for months together.

Naveed ul Amin is not lowering his guard and is preparing hard for the JEE advance test on September 27.  “I cracked JEE Mains last year too with 98 percent marks. But I wanted to crack the JEE advance. So I decided to reappear in JEE mains to improve my score and also crack JEE advance,” he told The Kashmir Monitor.

Originally hailing from Kupwara, Naveed shifted to Srinagar when he was in the sixth standard. The elder of two siblings, he had his schooling in Srinagar from class VI. Later he passed class 12 from Government Higher Secondary School, Batamaloo.

“My father has passed away. Except for my cousin, we do not have any engineering background in our clan. So I thought to live my dream to become an engineer. More than joining the IIT, I am passionate about cracking JEE advance,” he said.

Naveed’s success is not only hard-earned but bereft of facilities that the students of other states enjoy. From lockdown to internet shutdown to 2G speed, Naveed had to face it all.

When he was preparing for the test last year, there was a lockdown. Plus the communication blockade and internet shutdown added to the miseries. Passionate about his dreams, he did not give up and appeared in the test with full confidence.

“There was lockdown and internet shutdown. I would have improved my percentile had the internet been available. The Internet helps in a big way. Assessment tests are done before the main exam. It helps a candidate in preparing for the big day. But I did not have that luxury,” he said.

Despite slow-speed 2G, Naveed is working hard to crack JEE advance. “We have to rely on what we have. I hope to crack the JEE advance. I want to have a decent stream. It could be electrical, civil, or mechanical. Any decent stream would suffice,” he said.

What has made the success sweeter was that Naveed did not move out of Kashmir for studies. “I did everything in Kashmir. I was preparing in the valley itself,” he said.

Around 40 candidates of RISE scored 90 percent marks in JEE Mains 2020. This is despite the fact, the students were without the internet for the most part of last year.(KM)
