Former J-K Governor Jagmohan passes away, admin calls 3-day state mourning, PM Modi expresses grief
Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Jagmohan Malhotra passed away in New Delhi late last night. The two-time Governor of the erstwhile state and a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party was 94-years-old.
The J-K administration on Tuesday announced three days of state mourning “as a mark of respect” for Malhotra, better known simply as Jagmohan, who is infamous in Kashmir for his role as the Governor during the late 1980s and briefly in 1990.
“As a mark of respect to Jagmohan, former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, who passed away on 03.05.2021, the Government has decided that three days State mourning shall be observed from 04.05.2021 (Tuesday) to 06.05.2021 (Thursday),” reads a government order, as per local news agency Global News Service.
“The National Flag shall fly at half-mast during the State mourning on all buildings and places where it is flown regularly; and there shall be no official entertainment/function during the State mourning.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday condoled the death of the former Governor and termed his death as ‘monumental loss for the nation’.
Condoling his death, PM Modi in a tweet said, “Jagmohan Ji’s demise is a monumental loss for our nation. He was an exemplary administrator and a renowned scholar. He always worked towards the betterment of India. His ministerial tenure was marked by innovative policy making. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
