Former JNU student Umar Khalid arrested under UAPA

Former Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Umar Khalid was arrested late on Sunday night for his alleged role in the northeast Delhi violence, reported Press Trust of India.

He was booked under draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in April by Delhi Police Special Cell in connection with the northeast Delhi violence and three months later on 1 August, Delhi Police had questioned Mr. Khalid. The police had also seized his mobile phone at the time.

He was questioned by the Delhi Police Crime Branch for a couple of hours on 2 September in connection with the riots.

Attacks on Muslim neighborhoods had broken out in northeast Delhi on 24 February after violence between supporters of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and those against the legislation spiralled out of control, leaving at least fifty-three people dead and around 200 injured.
